Information about the radio
Our studios are in Torbay on the south coast of Western Australia, about half way between the towns of Albany and Denmark.
Established as an adjunct to an equine rescue facility, the studios look out over 30 acres of meadowland, currently populated by seven rescued horses and several dozen wild kangaroos - oh, and a black cat and our station mascot, Chumley, the Great Orange Octopus.
Radio WAN is rather different to most online-only outlets, we're run by an old-school broadcaster who has more than 45 years' experience in the industry who goes by all the 'old' rules of broadcasting.
We don't broadcast offensive material, we respect our audience and hold them in high esteem - how radical can you get?
We broadcast 24/7 exclusively in English with a live shift every day Monday thru Friday between 00.00 and 04.00 UTC - or 0800-1200 West Australian time. We produce regular live outside broadcasts of events of universal appeal, primarily events like car shows and military remembrance services which we discover have increasing interest across the world.
We have developed several outside broadcast units catering for small to very large events for this purpose. The largest unit contains a 15 Watt FM transmitter which we use to link to up to a dozen remote speakers when we need to cover a large area. As far as I know, we're the only radio station in Australia to have this facility.
Our on-air studio has been kept as simple as possible, we broadcast at 192kbps in order to provide a better audio quality than most of our competitors and all our production is done in house in a conventional multi track studio.
We currently operate a library of some 4200 items, but this increases all the time, with the intention to add at least 100 new musical items a month.
